leaf-square baby blanket

I’ve fallen head-over-heels for this lovely old design for grandbaby number 3, due to arrive in October. I’ve started on the pram/cot size and will decide on final dimensions as it grows. You can pretty much size this pattern how you like, it’s cleverly assembled in squares of 4 which block to make the leaf design.

I’m fortunate to have all the versions pictured, by Sirdar in 4 ply, DK and aran. Sirdar’s latest version however, is the pattern that grabbed my attention, it’s the use of their Snuggly Kisses DK (self striping) yarn that did it for me – irresistible! I’m knitting in DK shade 0750 multi soft muted greens. I’ve become a Snuggly convert, very impressed with the handle, softness any easy care of this acrylic yarn. Quite a turn around for this pure wool girl.

Thought I’d post a pic of my WIP for Raz. It’s coming along nicely and I’m up to the sleeves. I’ve just read the collar details – the 135 stitch 10cm rib might be pushing my luck with yarn quantity, hmm. I love the Naturally Magic Garden – BUTTONS DK 8ply. The fleck totally works. I’m using shade 899 turquoise from the Sophistikids range, purchased from the online knitting store The Yarn Queen.

This week Raewyn showed off her completed shawl and continued with her pink lace shawl;   Wendy finished her vest ready for washing and blocking; and Lindsay continued the edging on her knit-in-the-round shawl.

iKnit is…..

  1. I have all the squares knitted and sewn together, but I’m unsure how to connect thee large squares without losing the pattern. 😫

  2. Hi. I love this blanket design, but am looking for a pattern in a 14ply. You mentioned you have a pattern for an aran wool. Please would you share the pattern number, so I can see if I can get hold of the pattern? Thanks so much 🙂

  3. Where can I get this blanket pattern from please I had it once and I can’t find it anywhere and I really want to make this blanket for my friends baby

  4. i am struggling to get neat finish joining squares, Can you please expand on above comment do you crochet together on wrong side and what sort of crochet stitch? Thankyou I really want a neat finish and am struggling at present

    • Hi E

I put the squares facing right sides together and using a crochet hook lace them up. This seems the best way to join them for neatness and a flat seam (close enough to). I use single crochet stitch and add a single chain in between to give ease when it feels like it needs it.
      Hope this helps!

I’m just finishing another leaf-square baby blanket and I have to say, although I adore this design and everyone I know loves it, I dislike knitting the small bitty squares. The sewing up is really the most tedious part of this, the reason I’ve only made 3 of these blankets!

      • Hi R Thanks for this yes the joining of squares and the leaf trim I am making to be sewn around blanket are becoming tedious and very time consuming – although I must say I am pleased with the result. Doubt if I would do another. from E
